In the life insurance area, we offer a broad range of life insurance, investments, savings and pension products to individuals and groups. In the United States, we offer a variety of insurance products through Farmers, a group company, mainly for individual customers.

1872 Founded in Zurich, Switzerland
Began expanding beyond borders to other European countries
1898 The first rate schedule for automobile insurance was published in the Belgian branch office
1912 Became the first European insurance company to begin operating in the United States
1922 Founded life insurance operation, VITA Life Insurance Company, in Switzerland
1925 Zurich's life subsidiary became the first life insurer in continental Europe to introduce free medical check-ups for customers
1976 Became the first European insurer to offer umbrella programs to its corporate customers
1978 Risk Engineering was founded, which provides integrated risk analyses to corporate customers
1986 Japan Branch was founded
1994 Established the first direct marketing company in Switzerland offering insurance via phone
1998 Zurich and the financial services arm of UK-based B.A.T. Industries (Eagle Star, Allied Dunber in the UK and Farmers Insurance in the US) combine their activities in the insurance and financial services sectors to become Zurich Financial Services
2000 A Swiss holding company Zurich Financial Services was formed, with a primary listing in Zurich (ticker symbol: ZURN) and a secondary listing in London (ticker symbol: ZURN.L)
2009 21st Century, a direct auto insurer, became a group company in the United States
2012 The Group name was changed to Zurich Insurance Group Ltd
